A place where human skin was tanned in – read about Lederfabrik, the Auschwitz tannery

The town of Oświęcim is full of places strongly related to the Auschwitz camps, which aren't included in the protection zone. One of them was an abandoned building of a former tannery. It was opened at the very end of the 19th century and taken over by the Nazis during the Second World War, and a memory of the tannery was refreshed only in 2000 because of a controversial decision of creating a discotheque in there.

Portraits of Auschwitz: Dr Ludwik Fleck

On 7th February 1943 a very special transport arrived to Auschwitz. It came from the Weigl Institute in Lviv. People of that transport were put in Block 20 (the Prisoners' Hospital) in the main camp alongside their wives and children. They were assigned to work for the Hygiene Institute in Rajsko.
