Deutsche Erd und Steinwerke Residential

The Deutsche Erd und Steinwerke (German Earth and Stonework's), or DEST was an SS-owned company that was originally created to procure and manufacture building materials for state construction projects in Nazi occupied territories. The extraction of materials from the occupied territories was essential to keep up with the demand for industrial expansion. In Oświęcim alone, there were several gravel pits created to extract materials to build the main camp of Auschwitz. The DEST acquired a large building just a short distance from the main railway station for its civilian employees to live in, that became known as the residential building for the Deutsche Erd und Steinwerke.

The building has been largely untouched since the war and is still in use.
